Tipperary Player Profiles

Bobby Ryan

Bobby captained Tipperary to All Ireland success in 1989 following a barren spell and was in the winners enclosure again in 1991 to add a second All Ireland title. The Borrisoleigh stalwart collected five Munster Senior Hurling titles during a glittering career which also included back to back All-Ireland U-21 medals. Bobby won National League title and three Railway Cup medals with Tipperary in addition to an All-Ireland Club Championship with Borrisoleigh, the honours list also includes three All Star Awards

Michael Cleary

An outstanding forward for Tipperary in a career that includes two All-Ireland titles in 1989 and 1991 complimented with four Munster Senior titles. The Nenagh Éire Óg player has two National League titles to his credit and four consecutive All Star Awards between 1990 and 1993. The Nenagh native was Tipperary Captain in 1993 and also won a county senior title in 1995. Michael also coached the Tipperary Camogie Team to their first All-Ireland Championship in 1999 and added two further titles in 2000 and 2001 completing a historic three in a row.

Dinny Ryan

The Birdhill native won All Ireland U-21 and All Ireland Intermediate titles with Tipperary in 1989 and a Munster Senior Oireachtas medal in 1990. Denny also enjoyed an illustrious career with Newport GAA Club and winning two County Intermediate hurling titles and a North Senior Hurling title. Dinny also played soccer with Birdhill FC and was part of the panel that lost to Rearcross ‘A’ on a 3-2 score line in the 1998 First Division Shield Final.

Gary Ryan

The former Olympian from Kilcommon was the Irish record holder for the 100 and 200m. Gary competed for Ireland at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games in the 200m and the 4x 100 relay. During his career he won 17 national Senior Championships, indoors and outdoors and competed at numerous World and European Championships the highlights of which included winning a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay at the 2004 World Indoor Championships and became the first Irishman to reach a world final in a Sprint event when he finished 4th at the World Student Games in 1997. Gary also had the honour of captaining the Irish team for a number of years. Gary is a regular for Kilcommon FC in the NT&DL since his retirement from Athletics.

Seamus Butler

An All-Ireland Intermediate medal winner with Tipperary in 2000 following a fine win over Galway, the Sean Treacy’s goal keeper was also on the Tipperary Intermediate team in 1998 and 1999 and was also a panel member in 1992 and 1993. Seamus enjoyed a splendid career with Kilcommon FC netting a hat-trick in the Club’s first game in the NT&DL in 1995 and is still an ace marksman scoring in the Club’s last game of the 2011/2012 season, indeed the striker has scored in each of the intervening seventeen season. Seamus has won Barry Cup, Second Division League, Nora Kennedy and Third Division Shield honours with Kilcommon FC.
